There is so much to do and experience, here are a few musts depending on the time you have in our valley.
Weddings & Events.
Many important wedding day decisions hinge on your choice of venue. And the Elgin and Grabouw area is fast becoming one of the most popular wedding venues, and you will see why when you visit. Exceptional landscapes, venues and accommodation, with extensive wine and food options. We have experienced wedding and events coordinators will help assist you with your special day including rehearsals to the last guest leaving and even your post wedding brunch.
Horseriding & Mountain Biking.
Its also a mountain biking hotspot and finding a phenomenal mountain bike trail with a good mix of terrain, flow and length is not difficult in these parts. The Valley is perfect for two wheels whatever your level of fitness, experience, and adrenalin requirements. We offer top-notch single-track mountain biking options from gentle to steep climbs and flying descents with all types of smooth and rocky terrain. Our most popular trails include Cape Pines (Elgin Grabouw Country Club), Oak Valley, Lebanon, Thandi at Paul Cluver. In fact, amateur and professional riders come here to train for the annual ABSA Cape Epic, Africa’s world renowned, most grueling mountain bike challenge. The Western Cape based race includes more than 600 kilometres of track, a large chunk of which winds through the Elgin Valley (Grabouw). That said, mountain biking in Elgin is also popular with beginners wanting a novel alternative to walking or driving as a means to explore this beautiful countryside. You might even opt for a more sociable bicycle wine tour with tasting stops – just don’t forget your helmet.
Wine & Brandy tasting
Wine tasting is a vacation in itself and the Elgin Valley Wine route forms part of the Green Mountain Eco Route, the world’s first biodiversity wine route. If you’d prefer for someone else to do the winery to winery driving then you might want to consider a guided vineyard safari with The Wine Bus. Take a guided tour of the Oude Molen Distillery to find out about the art of brandy making. You’ll get to see the biggest copper pot stills in the southern hemisphere and experience a tutored brandy tasting.
Outdoor Exploration & Adventure
In addition to our formidable cool climate wines, our spectacular countryside is well known for outdoor adventure fun for the whole family. This includes nature walks, hiking, mountain biking, quad biking, kayaking, fly-fishing, bird watching and rock pool swimming. In fact, you can do a combination of these in a fun customised “mild to wild” trail ride through forests and fynbos with HBK Eco Tours. They also offer sundowner night paddles. If paddling’s not your thing, but a sundowner on the river is, then opt for a Mofam Palmiet River barge cruise. Mofam’s also the ideal place for water skiing and other on river adventure activities. You might also fancy some wall climbing, clay pigeon shooting, archery and more at Triactive Event Management’s adventure centre. Alternatively, try the Green Mountain four day, moderate slack pack trail. Kogelberg Nature Reserve For flora and fauna enthusiasts, Nature Discovery Tours can take you quad biking through the Kogelberg Nature Reserve with a qualified field guide. The reserve, with more than 1600 fynbos species in 18 000 hectares, forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Visitors will tell you it’s one of the most beautiful protected areas in Southern Africa. If you don’t fancy a quad ride, there are numerous one and two day hikes or you can explore the reserve in your own time. More see and do options Get some fresh off the comb honey from Bradford Apiaries and a basketful of goodies from one of the local farm stalls. Visit the Elgin Apple Museum, one of only two in the world. Get some greenhouse cut flowers or some roses.
